about

underphonic is a play on words.

subtracting a few consonants from plunderphonics, a genre that can be applied to this album, "underphonic" points to what's beneath music —nostalgia, memories, emotion. it also connotes something being lower, or sadness, and not high or cheerful.

but with that said, the question that remains might be: is it a break-up album? no, not in the true sense of that meaning, but yes, it is about loss. we may not all be in circumstances that leave us vulnerable to romantic break-ups, but we do lose things. overtime we lose friends, change jobs, leave places of residence. we all carry memories of things that once were.

but, i suspect that this is what makes break-up albums great: that even in the dark days, after any loss, no matter how long the sadness lasts, something will eventually fill the space that the loss made. even if it is a small memory, remember it. there is hope in it. there’s potential to it. look for it. do whatever you need to do to see it there, beyond the horizon, that beam of weightless light.

onward,
hetchy
