about

I'm turning onto the 190 just past Death Valley Junction. The edges and textures of the mountains begin to show their form. I've been awake for 24 hours and driving all night because I couldn't sleep in the Kaibab National Forest near the Grand Canyon 300 miles away. I passed Las Vegas at 2AM, so I'm beyond fear and loathing. I'm entering a state where bliss and paranoia mix. I'm floating.

Alone, I have 500 miles of road left to wonder about who I am and why I am here. I put on Paul Simon and Frank Ocean and Boards of Canada. I let the music and the road and sleep deprivation take me to where the light meets the darkness; where light and dark become entangled. The sunrise stirs us for this very reason. It feels like day and night at once. I feel light and heavy; open and closed. Who am I? An ancient reading of the sky tells me I am two things, but I feel that I am really just one thing: Two things at once.

Side one of Gemini begins and ends with songs that contain the same piano structure, like patterns of thought and behavior that we all get stuck in. The cheery-eyed young poet sets out to learn the language of expression. Innocent and unknowing of any darkness that lay ahead. The poet dances and is free for a while. But fear and shame follow closely behind. He thinks he is a soundtrack, that he is the main character of his own movie.

Side two begins with a new piano progression which breaks the pattern. The default way of behaving changes. We see things differently; we see them as they are. From the balcony of a small home in Italy, the bells make sense. They remind us to be in the world again; that we exist between and within heaven and hell. Light is light now. You are love.

You are free.

Thank you for listening.
